Veena Malik, the stunning, talented and famous Pakistani actress, has received death threats from the Taliban, and experienced a “surprise attack” from a Mullah during her recent Frontline interview.  Veena discusses the Frontline interview, honor killings in Pakistan, the death threats, her family and her plans for coming to America in this three part interview with Gabrielle Reilly.

Gabrielle Reilly: The Global Townhall is honored to have you Veena, not just because we adore you, but by doing so we also show the support of the world to the suffering of the daughters of Pakistan (or any country) that still practises honor killings and domestic violence.

Veena Malik: Thank you so much.  I am so happy to be talking to you.  I am speaking to you from Bombay today.

Gabrielle Reilly: Wonderful. I was out at dinner the out other night in America and you were the main topic of conversation.   In fact many people are talking about your Frontline interview and how well you defended yourself against the verbal attacks. You’re such a great ambassador for Pakistan.  How did you come to have such a strong and independent voice?

Veena Malik: I would say being a woman.  When I started my career for the first time as a school girl I have been facing such people who attacked me for just being a woman.   I belong to a society where it is a male dominant society.  They call A woman a bad name for doing the same thing as a man.  I did not know there was a trap set by that TV anchor in the interview.  I did not know there was going to be a Mullah on the show.  I went there to clear a few misunderstandings which people of Pakistan had about my show.  But the Frontline interview only went like that because of the silly allegations that were made against me.  I could not take that.  I had to defend myself and I did that.

When I say Veena Malik, the first thing that would pop into most of our minds would be Big Boss. Her actions in the Indian reality show “Big Boss” have been dissected and discussed by millions of Pakistanis and has remained the major topic of conversation for countless TV shows, baithaks, hang outs and what not. Admit it or not, all this talk surrounding her has made her somewhat of a celebrity. She was actually in the top ten twitter trends worldwide after the Express News interview she gave and as ProPakistani first reported, she’s the first Pakistani woman to ever achieve this feat.

Her controversy sold and she became the most talked about woman in Pakistan, seemingly overnight.

Well that’s not it. The real news is that Veena Malik has become a world wide celebrity. In fact, these days, a video of verbal spat between her and a religious scholar on the Express News interview she gave (on her return from Big Boss) is circling around the web, including Digg, Huffington and various other notable places.

Entitled, “This woman is AWESOME. Pakistani Actress Defies Mullah Accusing Her of Immorality”, the video has English subtitles as well, providing this issue an international audience. Though Malik’s not willing to say much on her relationship with Patel, she admits that they both refer to each other as ‘begum’ and ‘husband’. “It’s a pet name. I like calling Ashmit, ‘husband’. In fact, whenever I speak to him, I say, ‘how are you, my dear husband?’ For that matter even he calls me ‘begum,’” smiles Malik, who adds that Patel has a lot of ‘husband like qualities’. “He respects women, which is what most women look for in their husbands. But marriage is in the hands of God, and one cannot predict what will happen in the days to come,” says the Pak actor who came in the news during match fixing scandal involving her ex-boyfriend and Pakistani cricketer Mohammed Asif.
However, buzz is that the Pakistani actress is pushing Pateltowards marriage, and is also steadily working towards mending fences with his family, specially his sister, Ameesha Patel who was dead against their relationship. They say there is some truth to every stereotype — that generalizations passed down as fact have some universal merit. Models and actresses and their intelligence levels. Pakistanis and their religious zealotry. Veena Malik and her supporters would vociferously disagree on all counts.

The Pakistani actress and model has made it beyond mere international headlines, into the realm of viral internet notoriety. As one of the stars of an Indian reality show called Bigg Boss, in which participants are placed in a house and filmed 24-hours-a-day for three months, Malik became the focus of criticism by a religious figure and a well-known journalist in Pakistan recently.

According to journalist Kamran Shahid, and the Muslim cleric he brought onto his television news show, Front Line, Malik had some questions to answer about her representation of Pakistan and Islam following her time on the Indian reality show, which ended with her eviction in December 2010, not long before a winner was announced.
