The former girlfriend of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif has met International Cricket Council officials investigating match fixing, after commenting on her suspicions of Asif’s behavior.

Actress Veena Malik’s manager Sohail Rashid on Thursday said she met ICC anti-corruption officials on Wednesday evening.

Ms Malik had told Associated Press Television News that an Indian man frequently called and sent text messages to Asif, which she found suspicious.

Asif and fellow fast bowler Mohammad Amir are at the center of a match fixing controversy. Both were implicated in an alleged plan to deliberately bowl no-balls during the fourth test against England at Lord’s.

ISLAMABAD — The former girlfriend of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif met International Cricket Council officials investigating fixing allegations after commenting on her suspicions of Asif’s behaviour.

Actress Veena Malik’s manager, Sohail Rashid, said Thursday that she met ICC anti-corruption officials on Wednesday evening.

“She has shown whatever evidences she had to anti-corruption unit officials,” Rashid said. “I can’t comment on this matter further than this.”

Malik had told Associated Press Television News that an Indian man frequently called and sent text messages to Asif, which she found suspicious.

Pakistan will not include the trio of suspected players — Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Asif — in the two Twenty20 and one-day internationals against England.

All three were accused by a British tabloid of a plan to deliberately bowl no-balls during the fourth Test against England at Lord’s.

Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed said in Taunton that the three players were not suspended but that they will not play in the remainder of the tour.

Saeed said he would be asking for replacements to increase the squad to 16 for the ODIs.

Meanwhile, Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said that it was better to wait till the Scotland Yard finished its inquiry into the allegations.

“Investigations are still on and we have not yet received comprehensive report from our high commission in London,” Basit said. “It is better to wait till then rather saying any thing at this stage.”

An ACSU official has met with Veena Malik, former girlfriend of fast bowler Mohammad Asif, as part of the body’s ongoing inquiries into the spot-fixing scandal in which Asif is one of the central figures.

The meeting took place on Wednesday in Lahore and came after Malik, a popular film and television actor, made a series of allegations about Asif. Malik’s spokesperson Sohail Rashid confirmed to Cricinfo that such a meeting took place but gave no further details. An ICC official said that the game’s governing body does not comment on the ongoing investigations of the ACSU.

Over the last week the 32-year-old Malik has been particularly vocal in her allegations, claiming in several TV interviews that she has proof of Asif’s involvement with India-based bookies. The pair have been in and out of the news over the last year; in April this year Malik claimed Asif owed her nearly Rs 18 million, though the bowler denied the charge and the pair were thought to have come to a resolution.

Along with Mohammad Amir and Salman Butt, Asif is currently under investigation for spot-fixing during the fourth Test at Lord’s against England last week. Their names came out of a sting operation carried out by the News Of The World which showed Mazhar Majeed claiming he had bribed the bowlers to bowl deliberate no-balls. Majeed was arrested but released on bail without charge, while the mobile phones of the three cricketers were taken away by police.

Mohammad Asif, one of the Pakistan players accused of involved in a betting scam, flew to Thailand for a meeting with an Indian who may have been involved in match-fixing, Asif’s former girlfriend told the Associated Press in Islamabad yesterday.

Veena Malik suspects that the Indian national, who often called and sent text messages to Asif, was involved in illegal gambling.

“I was surprised why a guy from India is calling so frequently and sending texts to Asif,” Ms Malik said.

“That was quite suspicious for me …later on he (Asif) went to Thailand to have a meeting with this particular guy.”

Ms Malik, an actress, has been asked to give evidence to the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit in the match-fixing investigation.

Malik’s manager Sohail Rashid yesterday said the actress has been approached by the ICC and would soon be meeting her.

In 2008 Asif was detained at Dubai for 19 days when a small amount of opium was found in his wallet as he transferred at the airport.

“That was the time when ….the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) should have punished him so they would have set an example for upcoming boys,” Ms Malik said.

KARACHI: Former girlfriend of Pakistan fast-bowler Mohammad Asif, Veena Malik has been asked to give evidence to the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit after the actor’s claims about Asif’s involvement in match-fixing.

Veena’s manager Sohail Rashid said that she was approached by the ICC after she claimed to have evidence, just hours after Asif was alleged to have taken money for bowling an intentional no-ball during the fourth test against England. However, an ICC spokesman said the game’s governing body does not comment on the ongoing investigations of its Anti-Corruption Unit.

“A senior police officer called me and told me that an ICC Anti-Corruption Unit official will meet me to ascertain the veracity of the revelations I made about Asif and his links with Indian bookies,” Veena told the Times of India.

The film actress had claimed in a television interview that she had evidence of links between Asif and an Indian bookmaker and that the Sydney Test between Pakistan and Australia last summer was fixed. She has alleged that Asif had personally told her about this and she had also met the Indian bookmaker.

Asif had been embroiled in an off-field controversy earlier in 2006, when he was sent home before the Champions Trophy in India after testing positive for the banned substance nandrolone along with fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar. KARACHI: A two-member team of the International Cricket Council anti-corruption and security unit on Wednesday questioned Mohammad Asif’s ex-girlfriend Veena Malik to give evidence in the match-fixing investigation.

Veena Malik’s manager, Sohail Rashid, said on Wednesday that the actress has been approached by the ICC after Asif was implicated in the spot fixing scandal uncovered by a News of the World sting.
