Veena Malik, who is back in India at the moment, has recently become sponsor-mother to Payal Kamble, a seven-year-old from Sahara Charitable Society. While Veena has clarified that this means that she will be sponsoring Payal’s education and other expenses, she will not be adopting her properly, as she is currently not ready for motherhood. The news has gained attention, especially as it came around the same time as that of Veena starring in Zindagi 50-50.

“I worked with Veena Malik for three weeks in Bigg Boss and found that she is a very active and clever girl who always plans for the future,” says Ali Saleem. Is this why she had never tried to quiet rumours of a supposed relationship with Ashmit Patel? “I’m sure she isn’t really in love with that guy – it’s just a publicity stunt to find  strong footing in Bollywood,” Ali opines. “And I would further add that in Bollywood such fabricated scandals are part of the business.”

Ali does wish his colleague well though. “I pray that her forthcoming film Dal Main Kuch Kala Hai brings Veena Malik to light as a talented actress rather than (someone known for) cheap publicity stunts.”

Writer/ Director Rauf Khalid takes another tack towards Veena’s adoption. “I appreciate what Veena Malik has done since it’s a humanity-based action. Whatever else she is doing, is none of my business. But there is one thing I would like to point out to her: you have a number of deserving people within our own families. Priority should be given to them according to Islamic and humanistic spirit.”

“I don’t want to comment about her. Whatever she does, is her personal matter,” says Lollywood vet, Sangeeta. “But I take it as a positive sign that some showbiz personalities have already performed this good deed, which was also probably Veena’s intent.”

Veena Malik’s media manager Sohail tells this scribe that Veena has a six month visa to India, and she has also received some other offers from Bollywood producers. Because of this, Veena is so busy that she couldn’t make it home to Rawalpindi for last Eid, or this one. “I assure you that her act of adopting Payal is purely on humanistic grounds,” Sohail stresses.
