Veena Malik is nothing if not interesting. Brutal and honest to the core, the lady knows how to get our attention with a naughty quote or two. Always in the midst of a slew of controversies (most of which are generated by her own PR machinery) she is ever ready to clarify, complicate and add her characteristic dose of humour when answering our numerous questions. On this particular day, Veena seems to be in a great mood after shooting for the coveted role of Silk in the Kannada version of The Dirty Picture. Excerpts…
What’s the most happening thing about your life right now?
I am shooting for The Dirty Picture in Kannada in Bangalore. I released my first Bollywood film recently and I still have a major chunk of my projects left for release. I am very happy that I am so busy right now; it’s just great.
How bold is your character in the Kannada version of The Dirty Picture? Will it give Vidya Balan a run for her money?
I won’t say how bold it is in comparison because I haven’t seen the original The Dirty Picture but mine is a pretty bold character. I play an upfront girl who lives life on her own terms. It is entertaining but we haven’t gone overboard with anything. Her boldness does not only come from her clothes in the movie; it also about her attitude and her personality.
Who are your friends in the industry?
I am friends with everyone I work with and do count on them if there is a professional problem. I don’t have best friends and am a very reserved person in real life; I live inside a shell which I don’t let many people penetrate.

Your Swayamwar TV deal did not work out. How do you feel about this even though it had record entries of the franchise?
I don’t feel bad about it at all! People keep saying, “Oh you must be so sad, you must feel so bad,” but I don’t really. Since the age of 14, I have had many cancelled marriage deals! In those cases I used to say no to the proposals. Over here it didn’t work for me because I had finally agreed to get married. I can’t help it if the channel folded up! Maybe it is not in my destiny! Everything happens for a reason, I believe in the best.
Who is your biggest supporter in the industry?
In my entire career I have never been part of any lobby or camp and I don’t believe in them either. There hasn’t been a mentor or a guide, there was no one for me; I am my biggest supporter in this industry. I don’t need supporters either!
Who do you think would win in a race between Katrina, Deepika, Kareena and Vidya? I don’t think Vidya will win because she won’t be able to run that far (laughs)! Katrina won’t win either because she will only be concerned with her looks; she wouldn’t want to mess them up by running. Between Deepika and Kareena, I think Deepika would win (even though Kareena is my favourite) because she has long legs and is very athletic. Kareena has already said before that she doesn’t want to do stunts or anything strenuous because she gets tired so I guess she wouldn’t put up much of a fight.

“People in India just love me.” Veena Malik

It’s been a long while since Pakistan’s greatest export to the universe, Veena Malik, has spoken. Welcome back to the folds of the public eye and our collective public hearts, Veena. This is no way means we think any less of Meera ji, who remains our number one for everything till the end of time. But, you know, Veena Malik is back and we’re just so excited. By the way, did her dodgy film about being possessed by an angel ever get released and did it do well? Why do we even ask! Of course it did!

Anyway, Pakistan, the sad news is, Veena is not returning to us anytime soon. “I will be here till the time I keep getting offers and good work,” Veena has told Times of India. “People in India just love me and that’s the reason I am here. My work is appreciated and it feels good when you see yourself being loved by so many people. I am working hard on the South remake of The Dirty Picture wherein I’m playing Silk Smitha.”

As we well know from the Mumbai 125 KM head-bashing incident, Veena Malik is all about the method and hence has allowed her once dainty frame to add on some poundage.  “Until a few days [ago] I was 48kg, but now I am 55!” Veena has proclaimed. Pfft. 48, 55, you’re still as waif-like as ever, we’re sure. “Also, I am learning Kannada for the film and am singing a song in the movie as well. I am exploring all aspects of cinema and this is just the beginning of my acting career.”

The other bit of news is that Veena Malik has finally watched The Dirty Picture, which a couple months ago she said she would not, so as not to allow Vidya Balan’s magnificence to overpower her own artistic integrity or something to that effect. “Vidya was just superb as Silk in The Dirty Picture and she deserved the National Award for it. As an actress she is flawless. So it won’t be fair to compare her, and the role she played, with me because there is no comparison between the two of us.”

And finally, some word on how Veena actually feels about returning to Pakistan and how she feels she will be received back home post-FHM cover, which frankly, we had kinda forgotten about. “There are many people in my country, and in India too, who are ready with their criticism all the time. They will ridicule you when you do anything. And I did get a lot of criticism from there but I don’t think that they are a threat to my life. And if there are people who hate me, there are also others who love me,” she said.
